Countless images of Donald Trump have circulated worldwide, yet this particular one stands apart.

Captured during his booking at Fulton County Jail on a Thursday, Donald Trump meets the camera’s gaze head-on in his mug shot. The jail’s unforgiving illumination highlights his platinum blonde hair, resembling spun cotton candy. His gaze is intense and unwavering, while his lips press into a stern line. Unlike a few of his fellow co-defendants who smile, Trump’s expression seems to twist into a scowl.

Approximately an hour after the ex-President was processed and assigned the inmate number P01135809 at Fulton County Jail, the mug shot was disclosed by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. This followed the charges asserting his involvement in an illicit plot to reverse his defeat in the 2020 Georgia election.

Trump’s arrival at the Atlanta facility marks his fourth encounter with criminal charges within half a year, yet it’s the inaugural instance of his countenance being preserved as the emblematic representation of a legal entanglement. During earlier legal proceedings, the courts ruled that Trump’s mug shot wasn’t required, leading his campaign to devise a simulated version which was subsequently emblazoned on T-shirts. These shirts were retailed at $36 apiece, strategically aimed at energizing his support base.

Since the 1800s, mug shots have been captured to aid law enforcement in recognizing individuals facing allegations of wrongdoing, particularly in cases where they elude authorities or fail to appear in court. Furthermore, such images prove valuable after individuals are convicted and subsequently released, assisting authorities in their efforts to apprehend them should they face fresh accusations. Given Trump’s widely recognizable visage, the need for an additional image might appear redundant, and this consideration led to the waiver of this requirement during his past involvements with the law. However, this exemption does not hold true in Fulton County, Georgia.

Trump stands as the inaugural President to be captured in a mug shot. The nearest historical precedent occurred in 1872 when President Ulysses S. Grant faced arrest for speeding in his horse-drawn carriage and was brought to a Washington, D.C. police station. However, no photographic record was generated from this occurrence.
